The red-and-black young midfielder was praised by many international portals
After the 0-0 draw last Wednesday night (20), in the Maracana, against Palmeiras, Flamengo fans began to worry about one particular player: Joao Gomez. The young midfielder was one of the key players in the team led by Paulo Sousa at the start of the Brazilian League, and due to his good performance, he has attracted attention from other countries.
And in a report for the Spanish newspaper “AS” located in the capital, Madrid, the Brazilian was highlighted. The newspaper called him the “Great Ball Stealer” in the national competition. The article also confirmed that the 21-year-old midfielder has stood out not only within the Flamengo team, but also among the players in his position within Brazil, with Flamengo occupying third place.
“Joao Gomes in the midfield was an indispensable figure to compete and keep the team in order,” wrote the Madrid newspaper. The post highlighted numbers from the SovaScore database, in which the young Flamengo player appears as the leader in many of the fundamentals within the red and black group, such as tackles, passes in the final third, winning duels and interceptions.
“All these numbers speak of a whole number (…) [Paulo] Sousa has used him in recent matches as a midfield announcer, along with Thiago Maia. This ability to work allows others such as Everton Ribeiro, young Lazaro or de Arrascaeta to be more free from defensive roles. This allowed them to shine even more.”
