QUEBEC – schools must offer two periods of recess of at least 20 minutes in the morning and in the afternoon, and that, as soon as the next school year, announced by the minister of Education, Jean-François Roberge, Tuesday.
Surrounded by primary school pupils Montagnac in Lac-Beauport, suburb of Quebec, the minister praised the benefits of recess on the health of young people, and is committed to change the educational regime to include a minimum time of recess per day.
Currently, there is no tag in Québec to guide schools in the management of recess.
According to a survey conducted in 2017 by the quebec Coalition on the issue of the weight, nearly 40 percent of elementary schools in Quebec offer less than 30 minutes of recess per day, and one in every five schools offer no recess outside in the afternoon.
The government of the Coalition avenir Quebec says it wants to foster the overall development, the health and academic success of elementary students in Quebec.
The minister Roberge clarified that it introduces a minimum time of recess per day, that is to say that schools will be able to offer breaks in excess of 20 minutes if they so desire, leave to remove in the subject being taught.
According to him, this measure will not result in any additional cost. He said that his government will soon reach a turning of the money for the redevelopment and maintenance of the school courses.
