The first case of monkeypox was confirmed in Salvador on Wednesday (13). At a press conference, Mayor Bruno Reis (UB) announced that the city council is closely monitoring the situation and working to prevent the spread of the disease in the Bahian capital.

“The patient was already isolated immediately. Thank God he is fine. The municipality is following through health monitoring the case, which we hope will be isolated. We are studying where this patient was infected with the virus. From there we will adopt the necessary measures,” the director said.

The first case was announced by the Bahia Health Department (CISABB), which stated in a note that the affected patient is a resident of the Bahia capital and was admitted to a private hospital with a triad of symptoms of the disease. Illness: sudden onset high fever, glandular enlargement and skin rash. The patient is currently in isolation at his home in Salvador. Health procedures have also been adopted to monitor contacts, as well as isolation.

In addition to the laboratory-confirmed patient with monkeypox, in Bahia there are two suspected cases, unrelated to the confirmed case, awaiting the result of the laboratory examination, which is due to be released in the coming days. The disease causes fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, enlarged glands, chills, and fatigue.

Monkeypox is a zoonotic viral disease, of the genus Orthopoxvirus, of the family Poxviridae, which is similar to human smallpox, was eradicated in 1980. The infection is self-limited with symptoms lasting from 2 to 4 weeks, and can be divided into two periods: invasion, which lasts as long as Between 0 and 5 days, accompanied by fever, headache, myalgia, back pain, and severe asthenia. The rash begins between 1 and 3 days after the onset of the fever. The rash has similar clinical features with chickenpox or syphilis, with a difference in the regular development of the lesions.
