The president of the Maroons of Waterloo, David Godbout, announced Monday morning, a few changes aimed at curbing the wrong sequence of his team. Assistant coach Olivier Laliberté has been thanked, while defender Guillaume Veilleux will now have the title of assistant captain.
Beaten four times in its last five games, the training waterloise currently occupies the 8th place (10 teams) within the League of senior hockey AAA du Québec. Godbout believed it good to stir the cards with the means at its disposal.
“I’m a very rational, so my decisions are always based on calculations and thoughts. Considering the quality of defenders and goalkeepers that we have on hand, I found that it was a little below expectations. […] I had detected a flaw at the level of the defensive and unfortunately, someone had to pay the note, ” explained the one who is also a part owner of the Maroons.
Laliberté has been hired by the head coach and general manager Miguel Fortin after his promotion in the summer of 2017. Godbout also states that it made this change without it sounding Fortin. “I’m willing to say that Miguel did not agree with my decision. It is for this reason that I have not consulted “, said Godbout.
“But I believe that he was aware of my dissatisfaction lately. We were already in a precarious position in the standings and with our last defeat [ED : 3-2 against Donnacona], we sink even more. “
A friend of Laliberté in the life of every day, Fortin has preferred not to comment on his dismissal. Despite the growing pressure around the club, the latter nevertheless retains its functions as the newcomer Derrick Jacobs.
“I have tremendous confidence in Miguel and his potential. I would see it wrong to thank someone who works as hard. I am certain that the next weekend, he will bring other solutions, ” said David Godbout.
“This is the image we want to give the Maroons “
Meanwhile, Veilleux joined the group of leaders up to then composed of captain Alex Side and his assistants, Jonathan Bouchard and Jason Larochelle.
“William has played extensively in the League to a north american, it has a lot of experience. It comes down to Saint-Georges-de-Beauce to come play with us, with an absenteeism rate extremely low. And he has always defended his teammates. This is the image we want to give the Maroons. “Remember that Veilleux has already worn the” C ” in the Inouk of Granby, at the junior level AAA, during the 2006-2007 season.
He did not rule out other changes in the coming weeks, the president Godbout still believes in his group of players. The first goal is now to reach the top-6, so as to avoid the first round of the series.
“I was part of the consensus at the trade deadline. We had the chance to exchange big names to go in search of players that could lead us elsewhere. But we decided to keep our guys because we had confidence in them. And we always have confidence, ” assured Godbout.
Before the game against Joliette next Saturday, the Maroons will hold a team meeting ” in order to leave on good foundations “.
“I want to take the time to discuss this that makes us a good team. We talk a lot of negative, but it was also a success. We then had a good chemistry and we stood together. I want to focus on the positive and have fun, ” summary Godbout.
