The president of the QLP resigns

Le président du PLQ démissionne

The president of the liberal Party of Quebec, Antoine Atallah, resigned. His leadership was contested within the party, which is looking to rebuild.

Mr. Atallah, a pharmacist of 32 years, was the director of the QLP for a little over a year. In his resignation letter published on Facebook, it said to be disappointed, as several, of the results of the last elections. “I assume my share of responsibility in this result.”

Mr. Atallah said that he wanted to infuse change within the QLP. “And that, sometimes, bothers. This, sometimes, worried.” In his letter, he criticized the functioning of the party. “Let’s be clear, the latest institutional reforms in our education have made it extremely bureaucratic and it is very difficult for an officer to volunteer, unless a determination out of the ordinary, to put in place a vision, an activist and follow up on them once in power.”

Mr. Atallah, whose resignation will be effective as of march 8, said still still believe in the future of the PLQ. “Between the conservatism of the Coalition avenir Québec and the authoritarian marxist, Québec solidaire, there is a space for progressive dialogue in order to animate the public life of a vision that puts the economy at the service of the advancement of the social condition of our citizens.”

The meeting of presidents of districts of the QLP, which was held in Bécancour, last Saturday, has been hectic. Activists have demanded that the party holds quickly the next race for the chieftainship, which was not on the agenda.

In a press release, the interim leader of the liberal Party, Pierre Arcand thanked Mr. Atallah have invested “time and energy” to the QLP. The press release indicates that Mr. Atallah is leaving for “personal reasons”, while there is no question of this in his letter of resignation. Mr. Atallah explains, rather, to have made this decision “because the party needs is unity in this new period, and because the major reforms that I have put forward are in the process of being completed.” It has not been possible to obtain an interview with Mr. Arcand about it.
