WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The US Postal Service (USPS) said on Thursday it had placed an initial $ 2.98 billion order including 50,000 next-generation delivery vehicles for Oshkosh, and said the order would include at least 10,019 electric vehicles.

The USPS turned down an offer by the White House and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to reconsider its plans to purchase vehicles primarily running on petrol.

Louis Dijoy, head of the U.S. Postal Service, said Thursday that USPS “raises our early electric vehicles from 5,000 to 10,019.”

The vehicles are expected to be operational by late 2023, USPS said.
