The prices of the products left in the hotel minibar are usually the main targets of their income—at least, until they realize that a simple drink can exceed income by thousands of dollars.

For example, in the famous “Raffles Hotel” on Singapore, a popular drink called the Singapore Sling sells for about 39 Singapore dollars apiece, which is about 29 US dollars (141 Brazilian reals in our currency). Now, the daily profit generated by this delicious cocktail has been revealed.

“Millions” drink

According to a local newspaper, the hotel sells about 1,000 of these unique drinks per day during peak periods, for a total daily value of $29,000.

However, it is important to note that this price does not include service charges and taxes, so the estimated value comes out to S$46, approximately US$34.

The Singapore Sling was created in 1915 by bartender Ngyam Tong Poon in the hotel’s famous Long Bar and is widely considered the country’s national drink, according to the Raffles Hotel website.

Served in a tall glass decorated with a slice of pineapple, the cocktail is made with gin, pineappleLemonade, Curaçao and Benedictines.

It also receives a touch of grenadine liqueur and cherry liqueur, which gives the drink a light pink hue, which is the color chosen by the bartender on purpose.

At the time, the rules of etiquette stated that it was unacceptable for women to consume alcohol in public.

Instead, they used to drink tea or fruit juice. Ngiam saw an opportunity to create a cocktail that could be disguised as a simple fruit drink, but actually contain alcohol, allowing women to enjoy it in public without judgment.

Even after all these years, Singapore Sling is widely known and has been the subject of many online entertainments.

In May, user Tik Tok He shared his opinion about the drink, stating that the drink itself is not worth the dollars spent, but the historical experience itself makes up for it.

Raffles Hotel is also known for another rather unique and curious tradition: guests are given peanuts and encouraged to throw shells on the floor.

While there are strict rules about littering in Singapore, including fines of up to $1,000, the hotel’s website notes that this is the only place littering is “encouraged”.
