Tiger Woods underwent emergency surgery on Tuesday after being seriously injured in a coup in Los Angeles. Officials said Woods, the 45-year-old golf legend, was the only person in the car that sustained “severe damage” in the accident.
Woods was awake, responsive and recovering from a “prolonged surgery” in his right lower leg and ankle, according to a statement posted on his Twitter account early Wednesday. “We thank everyone for the tremendous support and messages during this difficult time.”
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said lawmakers responded to the scene at 7:12 am local time on Tuesday. His SUV went downhill, traveled several hundred feet, and flipped several times before landing on a hilltop in a Los Angeles suburb.
Local officials said Woods was trapped inside, forcing first responders to use tools to open the windshield to pull out Woods. The beloved golfer was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where he required emergency surgery.
“Mr. Woods suffered significant bone injuries to his lower right limb that were treated during emergency surgery,” said Dr. Anish Mahajan, the hospital’s chief medical officer and interim executive director.
Woods’ SUV – Genesis GV80 2021 – was the only vehicle involved in the accident. Pictures and videos from the scene showed severe damage to the front of the vehicle. The golfer’s clubs and other personal items were taken from the scene and a crane later removed the broken SUV.
Sheriff Alex Villanueva said there were no initial signs that Woods was disabled. Villanueva said the interior of the SUV remained intact, giving Woods a survival pillow, adding that the investigation could take weeks.
Reply Carlos Gonzalez, who responded to the scene, said Woods was calm but unable to stand alone. “I asked his name and he told me his name was Tiger, and at that point I immediately recognized him,” Gonzales told reporters. “It looked like it was clear and calm.”
Gonzales said Woods was wearing a seat belt, which “significantly increased” his chances of survival. The deputy described the stretch of the road as a “problematic area” for overcoming speeds and accidents. He said, “It was fortunate that Mister Woods came out alive.”
Florida resident Woods was in Los Angeles to host the annual golf tournament, The Origin of the call. He has spent the past two days filming with Discovery’s Golf TV with comedian David Speed and former NBA player Dwayne Wade, who has published Video Meet them.
Woods, widely regarded as one of the greatest golfers of all time, has racked up 82 PGA Professional Tour wins, including 15 major tournaments. He’s been recovering from back surgery and hasn’t played since the PNC Championship in December.
On February 16, Woods said he was still rehabilitating after the operation but did not confirm whether he would play the Masters in April. Last week, Woods said, “I’m fine, I’m fine. I’m a little stiff.” “Still in the gym, you’re still doing the normal things you need to do to rehab.”
“Barbara and I just heard about the Tiger accident, and like everyone else, we are deeply concerned,” Nikalos said chirp Tuesday. “We want to offer him our sincere support and prayers at this difficult time. Please join us in wishing us a successful surgery and all the best for a complete recovery.”
“I just saw the terrible news,” golfer Justin Rose chirp. “We know how strong you are, we’ve seen it a hundred times. Hope you pray and hope you are well, my friend.”
This is the third car accident involving the major corporate champion. In 2009 his car collided with a tree. Soon after, revelations about infidelity surfaced, costing Woods sponsorship, and bringing him into rehab. In 2017, Woods was arrested and charged with a DUI when Florida police found him unconscious behind the wheel of a parked car.
Two years later, Woods was noticeably back to greatness, winning a Masters award in. “I had serious doubts after what happened two years ago,” Woods said at the time. “I’ve been very fortunate to be given another chance to do something I love to do.”
