The former president of United StateAnd the Donald TrumpOn Wednesday, he said he refused to answer questions while appearing before the New York state attorney general in a civil investigation into his family’s business practices.
“I declined to answer questions about the rights and privileges afforded to all citizens under the Constitution of the United States,” Trump said in a statement.
The Fifth Amendment to the Constitution provides protection against self-incrimination.

New York State Attorney General Letitia James is investigating whether the Trump Organization is inflating property values. Trump and his two adult children, Donald Trump Jr. And Ivanka Trump, they struggled to avoid testifying but lost.
The attorney general said her investigation uncovered significant evidence that the Trump Organization, which operates hotels, golf courses and other properties, overvalued asset values to obtain favorable loans and undervalued them to obtain tax breaks.
Trump, a Republican, has denied any wrongdoing and described the New York investigation as politically motivated. James is a Democrat.

“I once asked, ‘If you’re innocent, why would you accept the Fifth Amendment? Becoming targets of a baseless and politically motivated witch hunt, supported by lawyers, prosecutors and the fake news media, you have no other choice.'”
He added, “If there was any doubt in my mind, the FBI’s raid on my home, Mar-a-Lago, on Monday, just two days before this testimony, removed any doubt. The current administration and many prosecutors in this country have lost all moral and ethical boundaries. for decency.”
The FBI searched Trump’s Florida properties on Monday, escalating a federal investigation into whether he illegally removed White House records when he was leaving office in January 2021.

A spokeswoman for the attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment, nor did Trump’s attorney.
Trump raised his fist as he left Trump Tower Wednesday morning, donning a blue suit with a flag pin on his lapel, before heading to the Attorney General’s office in Manhattan. New York City police and Secret Service officials stood guard as the motorcade carrying Trump arrived.

“I did nothing wrong, which is why, after five years of searching, federal, state, and local governments, along with the fake news media, have found nothing,” Trump said in his statement. The testimony is not public.
“Devoted food specialist. General alcohol fanatic. Amateur explorer. Infuriatingly humble social media scholar. Analyst.”
