Video: Starfish miss their ass? A biologist explains the phenomenon that causes envy on the Internet
1 min readNumerous photos of what appear to be starfish butts are generating envy on social media. Many netizens have compared the photos with Patrick Estrella, a character from the SpongeBob cartoon. This phenomenon has already been recorded on other occasions, but the topic has had repercussions in recent days.
Although the footage surprised everyone, the truth is that starfish do not have buttocks. Biologist Matheus Mesquita, known on TikTok as Biomesquita, has revealed the mystery of the “Miss Starfish”.
In his profile, the environmental educator explained that the exposed part of the animal is not at the top, let alone between the arms. “The starfish’s anus is underneath, where we don’t see it. So, alas, it’s impossible for this to be an ass.”
If not recently, then what is?
The biologist revealed that starfish have different structures such as muscle fibers in their arms and that the surface the animal is on can affect its appearance. “Gravity is pulling the starfish’s arms downward, meaning the rounded butt is just a temporary deformation.”
On the Internet, people liked the photos and showed some envy. A netizen commented: “Even the starfish is more defined than me.” Another said, “There’s no point in all the logical and scientific explanation, that’s Patrick!”
