Virus Alert: Bird Flu Spreads to Cows in Multiple States

Sick Dairy Cows Test Positive for Bird Flu in Kansas and Texas

Federal and state officials are currently investigating cases of sick dairy cows testing positive for bird flu in Kansas, Texas, and New Mexico. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reassures the public that there is no concern about the safety of the commercial milk supply or any risks to consumers.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was detected in unpasteurized milk samples from two dairy farms in Kansas and one in Texas. However, there have been no changes to the virus that would make it spread more easily to people. While there is a low risk to the public from bird flu, additional testing is ongoing to monitor the situation.

This marks the first time that HPAI has been detected in dairy cattle and the second time in a ruminant. Symptoms in the cattle include decreased milk production and low appetite, which are likely due to wild birds spreading the virus. Raw milk sales are regulated by states due to the risks of other bacteria such as Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria, and Campylobacter.

Although the avian flu virus does not usually infect humans, it can in rare cases. Symptoms of bird flu infection in people include eye redness, flu-like symptoms, pneumonia, fever, muscle aches, fatigue, and shortness of breath. Adherence to biosecurity measures and vigilance are important for preventing the spread of HPAI.

The global avian flu outbreak has resulted in a loss of domestic birds and economic costs. Authorities urge the public to remain cautious and report any sick or dead birds to prevent further spread of the virus.
