Your iPhone will have an advanced security function against hacker attacks; know | Operating systems
3 min reada iOS 16 It will have an advanced electronic security function: Lock mode, a mode designed to prevent potential hacker attacks directed at Iphone. The novelty was announced last Wednesday (6) by An appleand will also arrive for new versions of iPadOS And the macOS. This feature is designed for users who could be targets of dangerous cyber-attacks (in particular, spyware) and who need an extra layer of protection to maintain their digital security – journalists and environmental activists, for example.
The lock mode was developed after an Israeli company, NSO Group, created a spyware in 2019 known as Pegasus – which, in addition to spreading malware via WhatsApp, exploited vulnerabilities in Apple’s operating systems to remotely invade cell phones. Thus, without the need to connect with smartphones, this spy software can access messages, calls and even the device’s camera. The breach was initially found, according to the British portal The Guardian, in iMessage, the official messenger of iOS.

According to what Apple has released so far, with Lockdown mode activated, phone operation will be limited. In messages, for example, incoming attachments will be automatically blocked while the function is active, and link preview will be disabled. Calls not initiated by the user will also be automatically blocked, and it will not be possible to connect the iPhone to the computer and/or other accessories via cable if it is blocked. In addition, as Apple explained in its official statement, other protections will be added to the situation over time.
It is worth noting that in practice, the Lockdown feature should not be widely used by users. This is because, as we explained earlier, the situation is an additional and extreme layer of security aimed at advanced cyber-attacks – which, in general, is a practice that preserves specific targets, such as human rights and/or environmental activists. The idea of the job, then, is to increase digital security for this type of audience.
“While the vast majority of users never fall victim to highly targeted cyber attacks, we [da Apple] We will work tirelessly to protect the small number of users,” explained Apple’s Head of Security Engineering and Architecture Ivan Krstic. This includes continuing to design defenses specifically for these users, as well as supporting researchers and organizations around the world. They are doing the important work of exposing the companies that manufacture these cyber attacks.”
In addition to the new Lockdown mode, Apple also announced that it will donate $10 million (about R$53 million, in direct transfer) to groups and organizations that investigate and detect malware, spyware and other types of hacker attacks of a targeted nature. Like iOS 16, the function does not have an official release date, but it should reach iPhone mobile phones in the first version of the operating system.
