BEMIDJI - Sanford Health recently reported a significant and rapid increase in influenza A activity in the Bemidji area, signaling the arrival of flu season as the holidays approach.
In just one week, positive flu test rates in the Bemidji area jumped from 2.47% to 22.5%.According to data collected by Sanford Health, most patients who test positive are young people who have not been vaccinated.
"Normally we expect flu activity to increase this time of year, but the speed and magnitude of this spike is concerning," said Dr. Daniel Hudy, Sanford Bemidji's chief medical officer, in a release."Based on current trends, we expect flu cases to continue to rise in the coming weeks. If you haven't gotten your flu shot yet, now is the time to get it."
Sanford Health closely monitors influenza activity at all of its facilities.Visitor restrictions are implemented when the flu positivity rate reaches 30% to protect patients, visitors and staff.The Bemidji region is currently approaching that threshold.
Health experts are encouraging community members to take preventative steps now, including getting an annual flu shot, washing hands frequently, staying home when sick and avoiding close contact with others when they have symptoms such as fever, cough or body aches.
