The new HBO series takes a close look at the lives of young people in Los Angeles.
Andy Warhol anticipated influence culture by decades: "In the future, the world will be famous for 15 minutes."But he was a visionary.Of course, Warhol explores agents who seek fame for the sake of fame, and are often paid handsomely to do so.Turn on the camera, talk about how great something is, and call it an honest day's work. You are beautifulBonus points if it's a person.
The impact of sending a bad movie with Ingrid Test West, in which the main character Aubrey's tag came from the Los Angeles area where she has a celebrity/Instagram friend (Elizabeth Olsen). And funny. This is one show that can carry two potential ideas simultaneously: Lugeles is Vapid's fallen territory and remains a great dining destination and can be seen all year round.
It's also proof that a show centered around some pretty shallow and selfish characters can be pretty lively, if that absurdity and selfishness is the point of humor and those characters are written with a loud, bright tone. That voice belongs to Rachel Sennot, who created the series and also stars MayaHe's a low-level talent manager trying to find a place in the shark-infested waters of show business after moving west from New York.
Maya has her crew of besties, including Eleni (True Whitaker), the daughter of a successful filmmaker, who likes to party and spend money (and spend money on parties), and Charlie (Jordan Firstman), a stylist in love. Her boyfriend Dylan (Josh Hutcherson) is the token normie who cares less about niceties than a good Spanish teacher.Maya's life is both empty and unstable.
That life blows up her old friend Tallulah (Odessa Azian), a human hurricane and New York influencer who steals expensive handbags and screws everything up like a 21st-century screwball comedy heroine.Maia is troubled by Tallulah's destructive narcissism and relative success, which has been achieved on the other side of the country. She also loves her like a sister. So, of course, she gives her Decides to take him on as a client.
Slutty and Horny-The first episode opens with Maya and Dylan having sex during an earthquake (yes, the earth moves)-My love is also razor-sharply self-aware, with a clear tone that never lets up. That doesn't mean you'll like the tone (even if I did); This means the show seems to know exactly what it's doing and flows like it was conceived and executed with very little compromise. It doesn't grind or feel bloated; The eight 30-minute episodes are concise and tight, two adjectives rarely applied to television these days. It was received like a biting comedic manifesto by Gen-Z;Be on the lookout for think pieces comparing it to HBO's millennial "girl" and Gen-X "sex and the city" relegated to eternal sunshine.
All of the Cast do their part, including a guest spot by a Boston native I can't name. The leaders collectively accept shamelessness, even as they despise it.Firstman actually played an influencer (named Jordan Firstman) in the raunchy indie film "Rotting in the Sun";here he's more of a screenwriter, a seemingly shallow guy looking for the next thrill. But in Firstman's hands, Charlie gradually reveals unlikely depths. He can convey as much with a lonely sigh as with a sarcastic smirk. She might also be wearing a top with the question "Can I ask about the ocean?"
In such a fast-paced first season, "I Love LA" works in impressive character development. That includes Maia, who grows less likable with each episode;and Tallulah, who takes an almost reverse path when she finds some semblance of love with a hot restaurateur (Moses Ingram, channeling his sly, sleepy charm).
Sennott's biggest disappointment is that we like these people, toxic self-absorption and all. It's his internet denizens and apparently it's his life;New York, Los Angeles, Los Angeles, but La L.A.He's 30. So yeah, it's okay to hate him a little. That doesn't make him any less funny.
I love it
