Unacceptable!

Two weeks ago I went to a round table in London where gnount (hearing aids under the DanoLogic and Beltone brands, Danotechnics and Belenon brands) was talking about a new technology called Aurakest, which allows hearing users to watch live performances.

You might be wondering – what is Auracast?

This is a new broadcast using Bluetooth Low Energy Audio.Can be transmitted by many types of Bluetooth, such as mobile phones.

The most obvious way that this can be explained is by offering what the loop system originally offered.But the clarity of the sound has been improved.Multiple audio channels if needed, and more ways to customize audio settings for each user.and with easier installation

Many deaf people know that unreliable loop systems can occur for a variety of reasonsMany (myself included) don't even try to use loops because we are often left out by broken or switched off systems.The hope is that this new technology – which can be used with loop systems – will change the experience that ordinary hearing aid users have, and one thing that can help is make sound more accessible to people who are not deaf.

For example, a live stream of normal hearing might show a clear performance of a singer. And people who are fit for this may want to listen to headphones. Aurascast (aka AAF or Audible Hearing) uses this space to provide it and ensure it runs well.

There are various ways to access auracast broadcasts.If you have hearing aids with Auracast, it's as easy as going to the app and selecting your Auracast channel.It can also be attached to headphones.Another option if you don't have either of these is to provide a receiver through the area and collect the Auracast signal.This is how people use loop kits and headphones in their current area.

What motivates me is not only the clarity of the sound, but the fact that I can go to any signal and get a tool, understand how it works, and return it. Others may hesitate to use a tool that attracts the attention of the viewers, although this does not bother me, for me, it is something else.

For me, using a clear audio channel like Oracast will not replace the use of closed captioning, BSL interpretation, or text-to-speech, but will come alongside it, giving me a better chance of enjoying the music or singing, or getting a sense of the actors' voices, while using other accessibility features like closed captions (my personal preference).

Wednesday's meeting was attended by representatives from high-profile theater and arts venues, people working in audiology and deaf charities, who are discussing how Auracast can be adopted more widely and what are the barriers to a more accessible service.

Auracast can be found in hearing aids from GN hearing - organized by them, but also several other manufacturers, and is constantly expanding.I would encourage deaf people to ask their audiologist if their hearing aid will have Auracast (just to note that some aids are marketed as 'Auracast ready' which may mean they need a future software update).Hopefully the NHS will soon include Auracast in lower end hearing aids.And on the other hand, some are now sold through the television Auracast is already available in them, as well as from manufacturers such as LG and Samsung.

One hearing aid user at the panel got emotional when describing hearing through the Auracast, saying they used the sound as crap and it was "so good".Devices including the Auracast are available online - although quality can vary.

So what are the obstacles for auracast to become more widespread?It was also discussed at length in the meeting.
