(Reuters) – South Korean technology company Samsung Electronics announced Tuesday that it has selected a location in Taylor, Texas, for a $ 17 billion chip plant in the United States.
The Wall Street Journal announced Monday that Texas City Taylor will be home to the new plant, noting that the announcement is expected at an event attended by Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Samsung said in a statement that it has not made a final decision on the location. Abbott’s office did not respond to a request for comment.
The WSJ said Abbott had an “economic announcement” on its agenda at 5pm (8pm EDT).
Sources previously told Reuters that the Williamson County location, near Taylor City, offered the best incentives for any space Samsung would consider.
The world’s largest memory chip maker said it would also consider locations in Arizona and New York. This feature will be Samsung’s second chip feature in Texas, where it already manufactures chips in Austin.
Samsung joins rivals TSMC and Intel in a competition to expand contract chip production in the United States, where the industry is seen as a strategic part of the competition with China.
