The Neurosurgery Service at Clariston Andrade General Hospital (HGCA), this Tuesday (14), has identified its line of elective neurosurgeries. About 16 patients who have been admitted to the unit and are waiting in line have already been operated on. The Neurosurgery service is open 24 hours a day, including an outpatient service after surgery. According to the team’s coordinator, Dr. Eduardo Portillo, an average of 20 patients per week will be seen in the outpatient setting after surgery.

The neurosurgeon also explains that there will be daily neurosurgeries in the unit, operating patients diagnosed with brain tumors, brain aneurysms, and spinal cord trauma, as well as trauma/accident victims, hemorrhagic cerebral vascular accidents (CVA), Among other diseases. “Our team consists of nine neurosurgeons. The goal is to have at least one neurosurgical patient operated on per day in the unit, regardless of the number of emergency surgeries that occur,” concluded the doctor.

According to Tess Mora, HGCA’s Family Management Coordinator, the fact that the team manages elective patients daily, as well as urgent and emergency patients, facilitated waiting list filtering. “It is worth noting that we are not an open-door hospital for these diseases, all patients in Vieira de Santana and the region should be organized through the state regulation center with suspected diagnosis or urgent care,” Tice said, adding that “the opening is from a neurological intensive care unit with 20 beds that provide greater bed turnover for patients who require specialized care, whether surgical or clinical. In this way, it was possible to meet the demand and even clear the queue of patients in the hospital who were waiting for these procedures,” he said.

The Neurosurgery Service has a multidisciplinary team working from the care of these patients to their rehabilitation. Remember that despite the opening of these new beds and the change in performance implemented in the last 15 days by the current neurosurgery team, HGCA always operates at an occupancy rate above 100% i.e. the beds are still occupied, what has improved is the turnover rate.
