According to the team of researchers from Canada and the United States, it was discovered that although the object came from the Oort cloud, that is, the “nursery of comets” located at the final frontier of the solar system, it was not. sinner.

Since it was not a comet, the researchers concluded that due to some data collected during the fall of the object, reflecting light that was able to illuminate the sky for a few seconds, there is evidence that its composition and behavior are similar – more like an asteroid.

Moreover, due to a large number of assessments made by scientists, it was found that the object was part of an orbit of about a thousand years around the Sun before colliding with the Earth, which explains its origin in the Oort cloud.

According to the available information, this region of Canada is a spherical halo with billions or even trillions of icy bodies revolving around the Sun at distances beyond the orbit of Pluto.

Within a few moments, these objects end up entering the inner solar system, causing them to become comets, i.e. huge chunks of ice and dust that begin to show distinct trails as they get closer to the sun.

However, there is no similarity between the target that burned over Alberta and the comet. But it does appear to resemble a meteorite (the name given to pieces of rock or iron that have properties similar to those of asteroids, even if they are smaller, and usually remain in the inner parts of the solar system).

However, the presence of rocky meteorites in the Oort cloud could completely change some theories about the formation of the region.

Karen Meek, an astronomer at the University of Hawaii’s Astronomy Institute, said during an interview with NewsWeek.

“Because the giant planets formed in a region of the solar system where it was cold, and a lot of icy material was available, it has long been thought that the Oort cloud would only be inhabited by comets.”
