World leaders echo Lula’s victory

“Congratulations to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on his election as the next President of Brazil following a free, fair and reliable electoral process. I look forward to working together to continue the cooperation between our two countries in the months and years to come,” Biden wrote in a White House memo issued by the US Embassy in Brazil.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was elected on Sunday with 50.88% of the vote. He defeated re-election candidate Jair Bolsonaro, who received 49.12%.

French President Emmanuel Macron also commented on the Labor Party’s victory. After the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) announced Lula’s election, the French leader used social media to congratulate the next Brazilian president.

“Congratulations, dear Lula, on your election, which begins a new chapter in the history of Brazil. Together, we will unite our efforts to meet the many common challenges and renew the bonds of friendship between our two countries,” he posted.

The president of Spain also referred to another leader of an EU member state, Lula. “Congratulations, Lula, for winning this election in which Brazil decided to work for progress and hope. Let us work together for social justice, equality and the fight against climate change. Your success belongs to the Brazilian people,” Pedro Sanchez wrote on Twitter.

Among the Latin American countries, Lula was congratulated by the president of Argentina, Alberto Fernandez, who linked the victory of the Workers’ Party to a “new time in the history” of the continent. “A time of hope and a future that begins today. Here you have a partner you work with and you dream big of the good life for our people,” the Argentine leader said.
