1860 – Brazilian poet Casimiro de Abreu dies – Casimiro José Márquez de Abreu, a poet of Brazil’s second romantic generation, died in Nova Friborg (RJ). He contracted tuberculosis at the age of 21. By using simple, spontaneous and innocent language, he became one of the most popular poets of Romanticism. His success in Brazil and Portugal only happened after his death.
1867 – The State of Alaska is purchased by the United States from Russia for $7 million – This is the final region to be annexed by a North American country. Around it, Alaska has the Arctic and Pacific oceans, shares a land border with Canada, and is separated from Russia by the Bering Strait. Despite the geographical isolation and extreme climate, the discovery of important oil reserves has allowed enormous economic growth in the region in recent decades.
1931 – The great inventor and entrepreneur, Thomas Edison passed away at the age of 84 – He died in West Orange, New Jersey, USA. His most important inventions include the phonograph (the first device capable of recording and reproducing sounds) and the incandescent lamp (the first way to generate light from electricity). Along with JP Morgan, he also founded General Electric (a famous multinational appliance company).
1954 – On October 18, 1954, Edgard Roquet-Pinto, a pioneer of Brazilian radio broadcasting, died – In 1922, he came into contact with radio equipment and began his struggle to use the new means of communication as a tool for education and culture. On April 20, 1923, he established the first radio station in Brazil, Sociedad Radio do Rio de Janeiro. Years later, Roquette-Pinto wanted to donate it to the Ministry of Education and Culture, lest it be turned into a commercial vehicle. Thus was born the current Radio MEC. In 1934, he founded Radio Escola Municipal do Rio de Janeiro, a strictly educational station. In 1946, Radio Escola was renamed Radio Roquet-Pindo, in honor of its founder and creator, who, aged and infirm, respectfully disagreed.

Jean-Claude Van Damme – 62 years old – Van Damme achieved national success as a martial artist and bodybuilder in Belgium, earning the title of “Mr. Belgium”. He moved to the United States in 1982 to begin a film career, and in the 1980s he found success in films such as The Great White Dragon (1987) and Kickboxer (1989). In the 90s Double Impact (1991) Universal Soldier (1992) The Target (1993).
Chuck Lorre – 70 years old – Charles Michael Levine is an American writer, director, producer and composer who has created several American sitcoms such as “Two and a Half Men” and “The Big Bang Theory”. In 2011, she was embroiled in a controversy with actor Charlie Sheen after accusations the actor directed at the producer. This fact culminated in Charlie Sheen’s ouster from Warner.
