Bad news for air travelers.

Nobody tells that the Covid-19 pandemic ended up changing the routines of millions of people around the world. Due to the severity of the disease, many things closed down and most activities went out of production. Even flights took their toll.
But this situation directly affected the pockets of customers. That’s because airline tickets are getting more expensive. In 2022, the average price broke a historical record, with eight of the twelve months of the year showing the highest monthly values since 2011. The situation worsened in 2023 surpassing the previous year.
The average tariff cost in 2022 was R$644.50, R$113 more expensive than 2021, R$126 more expensive than 2019. Prices corrected by IPCA updated to February this year. In addition, the average cost per kilometer, in February 2023, was the highest value in the past eight years.
The culprits for the increase, according to the Brazilian Association of Airlines (Abear), are the rising dollar and the cost of fuel. The exchange rate accounts for 60% of the airline’s costs, while the value of aircraft kerosene, which makes up about 40% of spending, has been breaking records in recent years.
In addition, aircraft kerosene in Brazil receives prices as if it were imported, although more than 90% of this input is produced in the country. Despite the increase in ticket prices, people continue to go the famous way and tighten bills to continue traveling quietly.
