Dozens feared dead or missing after Rohingya refugee boat capsizes off Indonesia coast

In a tragic incident off the coast of Indonesia, a boat carrying around 150 Rohingya refugees capsized, leaving many feared dead or missing. Despite the dramatic rescue of 69 refugees who had been adrift at sea before the accident, Indonesian rescuers have called off the search, with survivors reporting that dozens were swept away by the strong currents.

The UNHCR spokesperson has expressed concern for those still missing, as the joint statement issued by UNHCR and IOM expresses shock over the situation. This latest tragedy adds to the increasing number of Rohingya refugees who have been fleeing persecution and violence in Myanmar.

Since mid-November, 1,752 refugees have arrived in Aceh and North Sumatra, marking the biggest influx into Indonesia since 2015. The majority of these arrivals are women and children, highlighting the desperate situation faced by the Rohingya community.

The international community must come together to address the root causes of this crisis and provide support for those who have been forced to flee their homes in search of safety. As the search for the missing individuals continues, our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those affected by this tragedy. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
