During a concert in Nashville, Tennessee, on the first Friday, Harry Styles finally told fans the meaning of the lyrics to the song Watermelon Sugar. Fans, with their theories, longed for an official version of the hit.

The singer had some suspense: “This song is about…it doesn’t really matter what it’s about. He joked.

Styles took some verses from the song for the audience to sing along with it. Then he finally revealed: “It’s also about female orgasm, but that’s completely different, it’s not really appropriate,” the artist said, shrieking.

Watermelon Sugar was released in November 2019. The lyrics read with free subtitles: “I just want to taste it, I just want to taste it / Watermelon is high in sugar,” and “It tastes like strawberries / On a summer’s night / And it sounds like a song / I want your belly / And that summer feeling / I don’t know if I can do without it.”

Styles has never mentioned any sexual overtones when asked about the song in previous interviews.

In 2020, during an intimate concert filmed for NPR, the singer spoke about his inspiration for writing Watermelon Sugar while in Nashville. “We had a chorus, a melody that was so repetitive, and a book by Richard Brautigan, In Watermelon Sugar, was on the table. And I said, ‘That would sound great.'”

In 2019, in an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, the musician was shy when asked if music was about “the joys of oral pleasure that both parties value.” “Is that what it is?” Harry Styles replied, “I don’t know.”
