Miguel Cruz, the person identified as the shooter, He was a personal friend of the late minister. He added that the person responsible for the accident is in the custody of the National Police and the Public Prosecution, adding that “the reasons for what happened are under investigation.”
Jorge Mira is the son of former President Salvador Jorge Blanco (1982-1986) and has been at the head of the ministry since August 2020.
Cruz entered a weekly meeting the minister held with his secretaries and opened fire, according to ministry officials who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity.
As a close friend of the victim, Cruz had no problem getting to the Ministry’s headquarters in Santo Domingo.
Police declined to comment on the incident. AFP staff present at the scene saw a heavily armed group from the elite police unit entering the ministry.
“We are appalled by the situation presented on Monday morning at the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources,” the ministry said earlier on Twitter. After the accident, the authorities evacuated the building.
