At least one person died and five were injured after a parking lot collapsed in lower Manhattan, in New York, United States, on Tuesday (18).
CBS News reported that the second floor of the garage collapsed on top of the first floor.
A spokesman for New York City Mayor Eric Adams said on Twitter that he was informed of the accident and was on his way to the scene to assess the damage.
“It felt like an earthquake,” said Liam Gita, a student at nearby Pace University. He said he heard “a great noise and a great crash, and then we all evacuated.”
Other Pace students described hearing screams and seeing cars crash into the building, which collapsed around 4 p.m.
The fire department said there were reports of people being arrested and searches were being conducted to make sure everyone was held accountable. The department said firefighters were evacuated at one point due to concerns about the stability of the building.
