California, located in the western United States, will not allow the sale of new gasoline-powered cars from 2035. The goal is to sell only cars that do not emit pollutants, encouraging purchases of hybrid and hydrogen-electric models.

This measure is approved by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), better known as the Commission on Clean Air. The forecast is that by 2026 a significant difference can be seen in California, where zero-emission vehicles account for a third of sales made.

Banning the sale of petrol cars is part of policies that favor the environment

California currently requires 12% of cars sold to be electric. Projections are that by 2026, 36% of cars sold will be carbon neutral and that number will be 68% by 2030. Additionally, it is estimated that the measure will spread to other states.

The topic is very important to the global community. World Health Organization (WHO) data indicate that air pollution is one of the main environmental risks to health. A report issued by the agency showed that nine out of ten people breathe polluted air. The situation is worse in the big cities.

It should be noted that California is not the first to adopt policies to encourage the sale of vehicles that do not emit any pollutants. While the UK and France predict the end of car sales by 2040, Norway forecasts by 2025 and India by 2030.

Although it brings positive effects on the environment, not everyone is satisfied with the new rules. John Bosella, president and CEO of the Alliance for Automotive Innovation (AAI), an entity that represents US automakers, said electric vehicle marketing goals remain “very aggressive and will be very challenging”.

Bozella warns that whether or not the new goals will be met is out of the control of the board and the auto industry. This is because the massive electrification of cars depends on other factors, which currently do not satisfactorily serve owners of electric cars.
