Alberto Fernandez proposes moving the capital of Argentina - News

Argentina’s president, Alberto Fernandez, revived the idea that Buenos Aires should no longer be the country’s capital, and moved the position to another city, in order to reduce strong disparities in regional development.

“Every day I think about whether the capital of Argentina should be in a different place than Buenos Aires, to give it all the potential that any capital in any country generates,” the president said at an event in Monteros. North Tucumán Province.

“Wouldn’t it be time for us to start accepting these challenges and thinking about how to do it as a society?” , Fernandez added, during a meeting of the Council of Ministers as part of the “Alternative Capitals” program, which he has implemented since the beginning of his term in office.Executive meetings outside Buenos Aires.

This is not the first time that the idea of moving the capital from Buenos Aires to another city has surfaced. In 2014, opposition deputy Alberto Aceve introduced a bill to transfer the seat of executive power to Río Cuarto, in the province of Córdoba, and to Parliament and the General Review of the Nation to the province of Santa Fe.

Months earlier, then-President of the House of Representatives, Governor Julian Dominguez – now Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries – proposed moving the capital to Santiago del Estero.

But, undoubtedly, the most talked-about initiative came in 1986, when then-President Raúl Alfonsín promoted a project to decentralize political and economic power that attempted to move the capital to the city of Viedma (about 800 km from Buenos Aires). The initiative that ended up not going forward.

‘Argentina is fairer’

According to Alberto Fernandez, for his government, “federalism” is not a “rhetoric” but a “call for the integral development of Argentina”.

“We also know that there are disparities. It is clear that in the center of the country there is the wealth of the countryside that allows us to export everything we export and produce everything we produce, but in the rest of the country there are other riches that we must give the necessary impetus because every province and place becomes a strong part of Argentina , that is, federation, to think about Argentina as a whole.”

The Peronist president stated that through his program “Alternate Capitals” he had already promoted the idea of ”leaving Buenos Aires, go and listen, go and see”.

“First, what we have to achieve is to put in the mind of every Argentine that we can make Argentina more fair, more balanced, more equitable, that we are not governed by the inequality we live in today, we can turn the situation around and it depends on us.”
