Man Found Dead After Crawling into Aircraft Engine at Salt Lake City Airport

Salt Lake City, Utah – In a shocking incident that has left authorities baffled, a 30-year-old man was discovered dead after crawling into the engine of a Delta Air Lines jet at the Salt Lake City International Airport. The incident, which occurred on Monday, has prompted a thorough investigation by Utah police.

The man, identified as Kyler Efinger, reportedly gained access to the secure ramp area through a terminal emergency exit. Once inside, he made his way to an aircraft engine that was not running and crawled inside. It remains unclear what prompted Efinger to enter the engine or his intentions.

Tragically, emergency responders found Efinger unconscious inside the engine and were unable to revive him. Despite lifesaving efforts that included CPR and naloxone administration, he was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause and manner of death, and a toxicology report may also be conducted to shed more light on the incident.

The unsettling event led to significant disruption at the airport. Flight 2348, an Airbus A220 bound for San Francisco with 95 passengers onboard, had to return to the gate, and all passengers were asked to disembark. The incident also raised concerns about security breaches at the airport.

The sequence of events unfolded after a store manager reported a disturbance involving a passenger inside a terminal. It was later discovered that Efinger had managed to slip through one of the terminal’s emergency exit doors and make his way onto the outdoor ramp area of the airport. During the subsequent search, officers found Efinger’s personal items, including clothes and shoes, on one of the runways.

Multiple agencies are now involved in the investigation, including the Salt Lake City police, the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Transportation Safety Board, and the Transportation Security Administration. The National Transportation Safety Board is gathering information but has deferred to local police for the primary investigation.

Thankfully, the incident did not directly impact other operations at the airport. However, aviation authorities must now grapple with the shocking and tragic loss of life, as well as reassess security measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

As the investigation continues, questions remain unanswered about the motive behind Efinger’s actions and the events leading up to his untimely death. The airport community, passengers, and aviation officials are left to reflect on this eerie and unsettling event that has reminded us all of the importance of vigilance and maintaining the highest level of security in aviation.
