Discover the “bear” on Mars

Astronomers at the University of Arizona have discovered a “bear face” on Mars. The discovery was made by NASA’s North American space probe, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO). Researchers Share the photo On the university’s website on Wednesday 25.

The image was captured by a high-resolution HiRISE camera, attached to the MRO probe. In the photo it is possible to notice a V-shaped structure that represents the nose. Two holes make up the eyes and a circular fracture symbolizing the head.

Possible origin for the “bear of Mars”

“The circular fracture pattern may have resulted from sediment settlement over a buried impact crater,” said Alfred McEwen, HiRISE principal investigator. Maybe the nose is a volcanic or mud vent and the deposits could be lava or mudflows? Maybe just smile and put up with it.”

Scientists say they are “amused” by the similarities between the earth signs and the bear. The animal’s apparent physiognomy is the result of “visual illusion”, or “facial pareidolia”: the human tendency or illusion to see facial structures in everyday objects.
