EU opens investigation into Elon Musks X over alleged failure to combat illegal content and disinformation

The European Union (EU) has officially launched an investigation into Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, under the Digital Services Act (DSA). The DSA’s primary focus is to ensure the prevention of the spread of illegal content, disinformation, transparency, and deceptive design of user interfaces. With this investigation, X faces scrutiny over its potential breaches of obligations related to these issues.

This move comes as X has been under increasing pressure to regulate its content ever since Musk acquired the platform. The EU had previously demanded information from X regarding its handling of hate speech, misinformation, and violent content during the Israel-Hamas war.

While X claims its commitment to complying with the DSA and cooperating with the regulatory process, there have been concerns and dissatisfaction among users and advertisers due to changes made under Musk’s leadership. Although Musk has positioned the platform as a space for free speech, it remains to be seen whether X has done enough to curb the spread of illegal content and whether its reporting and removal tools are effective.

The EU has not held back in criticizing X, naming it the worst platform for fake news and urging Musk to take further action. With the introduction of the DSA, tech companies are facing much stricter scrutiny, including the possibility of fines or even bans from the EU. While fines would be a last resort, interim measures may be implemented first to address any potential issues.

Currently, X has not provided any additional comments on the investigation. It remains to be seen how this investigation will unfold and what actions the EU will take to ensure compliance with the DSA. As tech companies navigate the changing landscape of regulations, all eyes are on X and its ability to meet the EU’s requirements for content moderation and user safety.
