Gerd Muller, former Bayern Munich striker, dies at 75 German football

Today is a sad and dreary day for Bayern and all their fans. Gerd Muller was the greatest striker of all time and a great figure in world football. We are united in deep sorrow, with his wife O’Shea and his family – the club’s president, Herbert Hainer, announced in an official statement.

Gerd Muller is one of the best scorers in the history of the World Cup with 14 goals, He scored in the 1970 and 1974 editions, and was the leading scorer of the tournament until 2006, when he was surpassed by Ronaldo Phenomeno, with a score of 15. In 2014, Miroslav Klose reached 16.

Muller scored 68 in 62 matches for the German national team, over eight years he played with the German national team National team (1966-1974). He was the European Cup champion in 1972 and the World Cup two years later.

Bayern Munich scored 566 goals in 607 official matches between 1964 and 1979. He is to this day the greatest goalscorer in the history of the German League, with 365 goals, to be the top scorer in the national championship with seven chances. He won the league in 1968/69, 1971/72, 1972/73, 1973/74. He was a three-time European champion, between 1974 and 1976, and won the World Cup against Cruzeiro.

The German is part of a selection of seven players who have managed to pass 700 goals in their career, in official matches. Besides him, there are Romario, Messi, Pele, Cristiano Ronaldo, Puskas and Joseph Bikan.

After retiring as a professional player, Muller worked for many years as one of the young coaches at Bayern Munich. In October 2015, the club announced that the idol had been diagnosed with dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease.

He was recently living in a nursing home. Mueller left his wife O’Shea and his daughter behind.
