The 78th session of the General Assembly is currently underway in an effort to address the global fight against tuberculosis (TB). This high-level meeting, hosted by the United Nations, brings together leaders from around the world to discuss progress, identify gaps, and work towards ending the TB epidemic by 2030.

The opening segment of the meeting featured statements from prominent figures such as H.E. Mr. Dennis Francis, President of the General Assembly, and Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization. Their remarks emphasized the need for increased efforts and collaboration in tackling TB, which continues to be a major global health threat.

In addition to these key speakers, the meeting included contributions from various other stakeholders. The President of the Economic and Social Council, the Chair of the Stop TB Partnership Board, a high-level champion of the fight against tuberculosis, and a person affected by TB all shared their insights and experiences during the event.

Member States and representatives from United Nations specialized agencies also participated in the meeting by delivering statements during the plenary segment. These statements provided an opportunity for countries to present their progress, challenges, and proposed solutions in meeting the TB goals set out in the 2018 political declaration.

As the meeting drew to a close, summaries of the multi-stakeholder panels were presented, followed by concluding remarks from H.E. Mr. Dennis Francis. Notably, a person affected by tuberculosis also had the opportunity to share their personal story and perspective on the importance of addressing and ending this epidemic.

One of the main objectives of the meeting was to review the progress made at national, regional, and global levels in achieving the goals outlined in the 2018 political declaration. Additionally, participants aimed to identify gaps and propose solutions that can expedite progress towards ending the TB epidemic by 2030.

Importantly, the outcome of this high-level meeting will be the approval of a concise and action-oriented political declaration. This declaration will be submitted by the President of the General Assembly for adoption by the entire General Assembly, signifying a global commitment to intensifying efforts in the fight against tuberculosis.

This significant event highlights the ongoing importance of addressing and ending the TB epidemic. With increased collaborative efforts and political commitment, it is hoped that progress can be accelerated towards achieving the ambitious goal of ending TB by 2030.
