Investigation underway for Meningitis case in Norfolk

The Norfolk Department of Public Health is currently investigating a case of bacterial meningitis following the recent death of a student from the illness at Francis Asbury Elementary School in Hampton. Bacterial meningitis is a serious infection that can be spread from person to person through respiratory and throat secretions. This means it can be contracted through actions such as coughing, sneezing, kissing, or sharing drinks or utensils.

Symptoms of meningococcal disease, which is caused by the bacteria that leads to meningitis, include fever, headache, stiff neck, altered mental status, and light sensitivity. Other symptoms may also occur, such as chills, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and rash.

Fortunately, bacterial meningitis can be prevented through vaccination, which is available through the Norfolk Department of Public Health. The health department is working diligently to identify close contacts of the infected person and provide necessary medication and vaccines to prevent further spread of the illness.
