Women may be more likely to reap greater health benefits from regular exercise compared to men, according to a recent study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. The study, which analyzed data from over 400,000 U.S. adults from 1997 to 2017, found that women who engaged in 2.5 hours of moderate physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise weekly were 24% less likely to die compared to women who did not exercise regularly. In contrast, men who exercised for the same amount of time each week had only a 15% lower chance of dying than their inactive counterparts.

The study also revealed that women could achieve the same risk reduction with less exercise than men, with women needing only about 2.5 hours of moderate to vigorous exercise each week compared to about five hours for men. Researchers believe that anatomical differences between men and women may play a role in these findings.

It is important to note that the study was observational and did not take into account lifestyle factors such as diet, tobacco, or alcohol use. However, experts emphasize the importance of incorporating regular exercise into a weekly routine for optimal health, recommending both aerobic and strength-training exercises for heart health.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Americans should aim to get at least 2.5 to 5 hours per week of moderate physical activity, 1 hour and 15 minutes to 2 hours and 30 minutes of vigorous physical activity, or a combination of both to maintain overall health and well-being.
