Verizon Settles Lawsuit, Potentially Offering Refunds to Customers

Verizon customers may have a chance to receive a refund as part of a proposed $100 million class action settlement. The settlement follows a lawsuit that accuses Verizon of charging unfair and undisclosed fees to its customers.

To be eligible for a refund of up to $100, customers must file a claim by April 15. They are being notified through postcards or emails about the settlement details. However, filing a claim is necessary to take advantage of this opportunity.

The focus of the lawsuit is Verizon’s “administrative charge,” which the plaintiffs argue was not adequately disclosed in the advertised price of their phone plans. The plaintiffs claim that this charge was revealed neither during sales transactions nor in marketing materials.

Verizon, on the other hand, denies these claims and asserts that it clearly disclosed the charge during sales transactions and in its marketing materials. The company maintains its innocence.

This settlement combines four separate lawsuits and is scheduled for a fairness hearing in March. It is an important milestone for affected customers seeking justice against Verizon.

The Biden administration has also expressed concern about hidden or misleading fees. In an effort to combat such practices, they have proposed a rule to ban them altogether. This settlement aligns with the administration’s objective of protecting consumers from unfair charges.

To apply for a refund, affected customers must visit a special website and provide their Verizon account phone number and preferred method of receiving the money. The payout will be a minimum of $15, but the amount could potentially be higher based on the customer’s tenure with Verizon and the number of claims filed.

However, it is important to note that only customers with postpaid wireless accounts or data plans between January 1, 2016, and November 8, 2023, are eligible for the refund. Customers who fail to file a claim will waive their right to sue Verizon regarding the issues raised in the lawsuit.

This settlement provides a glimmer of hope for Verizon customers who have long been concerned about undisclosed fees and charges. As the fairness hearing approaches, affected customers are encouraged to take action before the April 15 deadline to potentially receive their refunds.
