MLB Teams Make Crucial Decisions on Qualifying Offers to Free Agents

The MLB offseason is now in full swing, and teams have been making crucial decisions regarding their eligible free agents. By Monday, November 6, teams had to make qualifying offers to these players, a one-year contract set at the average of the top 125 salaries in baseball, which this offseason amounts to an impressive $20.325 million.

Accept or Reject?

Players who accept the qualifying offer will return to their team for the upcoming season on the one-year contract. On the other hand, those who reject it are tied to draft pick compensation. However, not all players are eligible for the qualifying offer. In order to qualify, players must have spent the entire 2023 season with one team and have not received the qualifying offer previously.

The deadline for players to accept or reject the qualifying offer is November 14 at 4 p.m. ET. As expected, some prominent players are already making their intentions clear. Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angels is likely to reject the qualifying offer as he is poised to sign what could potentially be the largest contract in baseball history this offseason.

Another player expected to decline the qualifying offer is Cody Bellinger, who had a strong season after being non-tendered last year. Bellinger is likely to become one of the most sought-after free agents in the market.

Teams Make Their Moves

The San Diego Padres have made the qualifying offer to pitchers Josh Hader and Blake Snell. However, both players are expected to reject the offer. Hader could potentially sign a contract similar to Edwin Díaz’s record deal, while Snell is likely to receive a lucrative nine-figure payday.

Aaron Nola of the Philadelphia Phillies received the qualifying offer, but the team is open to working out a new deal with him. If Nola signs elsewhere, the Phillies will receive a compensation pick after the fourth round.

Meanwhile, Sonny Gray of the Minnesota Twins received the qualifying offer after an impressive season. The compensation pick the Twins receive will depend on the size of Gray’s eventual contract.

Matt Chapman of the Toronto Blue Jays, despite a slow start at the plate, received the qualifying offer due to his strong defensive skills.

Notable players who did not receive the qualifying offer include Rhys Hoskins, Mike Clevinger, Teoscar Hernández, Clayton Kershaw, J.D. Martinez, and Jorge Soler.

Ineligible Players

It’s also important to note that Jordan Montgomery was not eligible for the qualifying offer as he had been traded midseason. Marcus Stroman and Eduardo Rodriguez were also not eligible due to having received the qualifying offer earlier in their careers.

As the November 14 deadline approaches, fans and teams alike eagerly await the decisions of these important players. The landscape of the upcoming MLB season will certainly be influenced by the offers and choices made during this crucial period.
