Chicago Authorities Identify Two Cases of Measles
Chicago authorities have confirmed two cases of measles in the city, one involving a resident and the other a migrant child at a shelter. The source of infection for the city resident remains unknown, but they are currently recovering at home with their infectious period ending on March 6. The migrant child has also recovered and is no longer infectious.
City agencies are actively working to identify and notify individuals who may have been in contact with the two diagnosed cases. Residents of the migrant shelter in the Pilsen neighborhood have been asked to remain in place as authorities assess vaccination status and the risk of infection.
Alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez reported that the shelter population this week was 1,876 people, including 95 toddlers between the ages of 1 and 2. The city is urging anyone who was at Swedish Hospital on Feb. 27 or on Chicago Transit Authority Bus 92 on the same day to contact the department for further instructions.
Although measles cases have been on the rise internationally and in the United States, Chicago has a high vaccination coverage. Five cases of measles were reported in Illinois in 2023, the first since 2019. There is currently no known link between the city resident’s case and that of an Indiana man who visited Chicago last month.
The MMR vaccine is highly effective at preventing the transmission of measles, with a 97% success rate. Health officials emphasize the importance of getting vaccinated to protect oneself and others from the spread of this highly contagious disease.
