A recent study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has found that bariatric surgery may be more effective in controlling blood glucose levels and achieving remission of type 2 diabetes compared to medication and lifestyle changes. The study, which combined data from four independent trials, evaluated the effectiveness, durability, and safety of bariatric surgery in treating type 2 diabetes.

Researchers found that participants who underwent bariatric surgery had a higher likelihood of achieving diabetes remission and experienced greater improvements in blood glucose control compared to those who received medical and lifestyle interventions. These benefits were sustained for up to 12 years post-surgery, showing long-term effects.

Interestingly, the study also found that participants with a lower BMI who underwent bariatric surgery still saw improvements in blood glucose control and weight loss, suggesting that surgery may benefit those who do not meet traditional BMI thresholds.

While no major adverse events were reported between the surgery and medical/lifestyle groups, the surgery group did experience a higher number of fractures, anemia, low iron, and gastrointestinal events which may be linked to nutritional deficiencies. The study emphasizes the importance of continued monitoring for individuals who undergo bariatric surgery to address potential nutritional deficiencies.

The study was part of the Alliance of Randomized Trials of Medicine vs. Metabolic Surgery in Type 2 Diabetes (ARMMS-T2D) and was supported by the NIDDK. NIDDK Director Dr. Griffin P. Rodgers highlighted the importance of public investments in obesity and diabetes research in leading to clinical advances and long-term health benefits for individuals with these conditions.
