Architects Paula Herrera and Beatriz María Jiménez have recently completed a remarkable renovation project in Madrid’s Embajadores neighborhood. The duo aimed to transform a dated house from the 70s into a modern and fluid living space, and the results are nothing short of impressive.

Dubbed J29, the project’s focal point is an integrated kitchen featuring an industrial-style island. The architects used diffuse lighting to accentuate the kitchen’s horizontal lines, giving it a sleek and contemporary feel. Taking inspiration from legendary filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, the design of the house incorporates acid, primary, and saturated colors, adding significance and character to the overall ambiance.

One of the standout features of the renovated house is the visual link between the kitchen and the terrace. To enhance the feeling of spaciousness, the architects installed mirrored doors that not only connect the two areas but also reflect the natural light. Additionally, the island in the kitchen boasts a unique metallic structure that serves as the home for the bell and a wrought-iron pillar, cleverly hidden under a seven-meter-long beam.

Moving through the house, visitors will notice a hallway adorned with a translucent glass panel. This design choice allows natural light to filter into the space from the adjacent study, creating a bright and inviting atmosphere. The hallway’s cabinets are highlighted in a vibrant green color, adding a touch of freshness to the overall aesthetic.

In wet spaces such as bathrooms and kitchens, ceramic tiles with dark joints were chosen to add character to the areas. The architects decided to use a combination of white, black, and yellow tiles, creating a playful and visually appealing look.

The use of color was crucial in this renovation project. Each color was carefully chosen and linked to specific processes and actions within the house. This attention to detail adds depth and meaning to the space, creating a unique and personalized environment.

Apart from the interior design, the house also includes dedicated spaces for vegetation. The architects made sure to incorporate greenery throughout the house, enhancing the connection between the residents and nature.

One of the main challenges faced by Herrera and Jiménez was to create a central living room space that would revolve around the kitchen and its prominent island. They also had to arrange easy access to the master bedroom and office without compromising the flow and functionality of the house. These challenges were successfully overcome, resulting in a harmonious and inviting living space.

The J29 project by architects Paula Herrera and Beatriz María Jiménez has breathed new life into a once-outdated house in Madrid. Through careful design choices and a meticulous attention to detail, the architects have transformed the compartmentalized structure into a fluid and visually stunning home. The incorporation of vibrant colors, integrated spaces, and nods to Almodóvar films make this renovation truly remarkable.
