Hiker Fends Off Rabid Coyote Attack in Rhode Island

A terrifying encounter with a coyote turned into a heroic act of survival for a hiker in Rhode Island. The courageous hiker managed to kill the aggressive animal using only his bare hands after being bitten on the leg during the recent attack. Officials have since revealed that the coyote, which exhibited abnormal behavior, tested positive for rabies.

The incident unfolded when the hiker, whose identity remains undisclosed, was exploring the picturesque wilderness of Rhode Island. Suddenly, the coyote pounced on him, sinking its teeth into his leg. Determined not to become another victim, the hiker wrestled with the coyote, managing to pin it down and eventually cutting off its air supply. This extraordinary feat allowed him to neutralize the threat and escape the brutal attack.

This resilient hiker’s bravery not only saved his own life but likely prevented further harm to others. Authorities discovered that the very same coyote had attacked a dog walker in a nearby town just a day before. In light of these incidents, Rhode Island State Health Laboratories conducted tests that confirmed the presence of rabies in the predatory animal.

This distressing news brings to light the rarity of such cases. Since 1994, only three instances of rabid coyotes attacking humans have been reported in Rhode Island. In normal circumstances, it is incredibly uncommon for a coyote to show aggression towards humans. However, with the recent incidents, authorities are urging the public to exercise caution when encountering wildlife and to promptly report any suspicious or aggressive behavior.

Interestingly, this is not the first time a brave hiker has defended themselves against a coyote attack. In January 2020, a similar incident occurred in New Hampshire, where a man heroically killed a coyote with his bare hands after it attacked him and his family during a hike. Unfortunately, it remains unclear if that coyote also tested positive for rabies.

These incidents serve as a reminder of the unpredictability of encounters with wildlife. While such attacks are rare, it is essential to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. Authorities believe that increased awareness and reporting can help mitigate potential risks and ensure the safety of both humans and wildlife in the region.
