Shiv Telegram Media: The Limitations of Alternative iOS App Stores Outside EU
2 min readApple has released a new update, iOS 17.4, specifically catering to iPhone users in the European Union. This update now allows users in the EU to access third-party app stores, a significant shift from Apple’s previous strict control over app installations.
One key feature of this update is the introduction of a “grace period” for users traveling outside of the EU. During this period, some features may still work before eventually stopping. The duration of this grace period is currently unclear, and Apple has been contacted for further clarification.
This change comes in response to the Digital Markets Act, which is set to take effect on March 7 in all 27 EU countries. In addition to access to third-party app stores, iOS 17.4 also allows users to set their preferred alternative app store as the default and gives parents control over app installations on their children’s devices.
However, there are specific requirements for users to access alternative app marketplaces. Users must have their Apple ID set to an EU country and be physically located within the EU.
The first alternative app marketplace in the EU is set to launch this week by Mobivention, with others planned by MacPaw and Epic Games. It is important to note that these changes are specific to the EU and do not apply to iPadOS in any country.
Overall, this update signifies a significant shift in Apple’s policies towards app installations and opens up more options for iPhone users in the EU. It will be interesting to see how this change impacts the app ecosystem within the EU and whether it will lead to more competition and innovation in the market.
