The child reporter who interviewed Obama at the White House has died at the age of 23

West Palm Beach, Flo. (AP) – A nationally acclaimed student reporter died of natural causes during an interview with President Barack Obama at the White House in 2009, his family said.

Damon Weaver was 23 years old when he died on May 1, his sister Candace Hardy said Palm Beach Post. Further details have not been released. He studied Communication at Albany State University in Georgia.

Weaver was 11 years old when he interviewed Obama for 10 minutes in the diplomatic room on August 13, 2009, asking questions that focused primarily on education. He covers school lunches, bullying, conflict resolution and how to succeed.

Weaver then asked Obama if he was his “home boy” and said he had already accepted then-Vice President Joe Biden.

“Of course,” Obama smiled and waved the boy’s hand.

He then used that meeting to interview athletes like Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne Wade.

“He’s a good man, real, very intelligent,” Hardy said. “It simply came to our notice then. He never said no to anyone. ”

“Damon is the kid who ran me into the hall to tell me he was interested,” his teacher Brian Zimmerman told the Post in 2016. “Right now, I saw the way he was on camera. You can see it coming through his personality. He’s not nervous about being on camera. ”
