The space agency says the debris found in Australia belongs to SpaceX International
2 min readFound a wreck in the rural area of Australia Last week they were part of a mission by SpaceX, the private rocket company founded by the billionaire Elon Muskthe Australian Space Agency confirmed in a statement to local broadcaster ABC on Wednesday (3).
Sought by local farmers, astrophysicist Brad Tucker visited the site in Dalejee, in the state of New South Wales, to examine the debris that had burned up after re-entering Earth’s atmosphere.
“It was exciting and weird at the same time,” said the astrophysicist. “It’s great to see you.”
According to Tucker, the wreck likely fell on July 9. Sheep farmer Meek Miners, who owns the farm where the pieces fell, said he didn’t realize it was a piece of a spaceship until weeks later. As he was obscured, seen from afar, he was confused with a burning tree.
Tucker said the wreck was not a public hazard and described the find as “extremely rare”. The largest piece is about three meters long.
According to Tucker, the piece was part of a box that the Crew-1 capsule discarded when it re-entered Earth’s atmosphere in 2021. Other reports of space debris from nearby properties have already been reported, making it likely that more pieces from SpaceX will appear on the mission. .
Most space debris falls into the sea, but as the space industries advance around the world, the volume of debris on Earth is likely to increase. “We have to assess the potential risk of hitting a populated area and what that means,” Tucker warned.
In a statement, the Australian Space Agency asked residents to report any new discoveries to SpaceX.
“The agency has confirmed that the debris comes from the SpaceX mission and remains in contact with our American counterparts,” an agency spokesperson said.
