After the statue was removed, workers began searching for a time capsule hidden in 1887 on a 40-foot granite pedestal. It was discovered last week when the statue was removed and taken to the Richmond Historic Resources Department. .
Virginia Governor Ralph Northm opened a shoebox-sized small vault today. In a 1887 newspaper article, the capsule contained civil war memorials, the Confederacy coin, maps, a Bible, and a photograph of President Abraham Lincoln and other elements.
In the box were three books, a sealed envelope with a photo, and an unknown coin. Books, envelopes and photographs were damaged by water seeping into the bond.
One of the books is 1875 “American Epimeris and the Nautical Almanac”, a guide for astronomers, survivors and navigators. Another appears to be a book published in 1889, two years after the time capsule was closed, leading to speculation that there may be another time capsule hidden in the pedestal.
