WASHINGTON, Jan. 19 (Sputnik) – The New York Times reported that the Biden administration is considering providing Ukraine with the weapons needed to target Crimea, a region that has proven instrumental in Russia’s moves during the ongoing special military operation.
The US government believes that Kyiv’s position in future negotiations will improve if the Ukrainian military can threaten Russia’s control of Crimea, although such a move could increase the risk of conflict escalation, a report said Wednesday.
The report added that government officials are discussing with their Ukrainian counterparts the use of weapons provided by the United States, including Highly Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and Bradley Fighting Vehicles, to cover targets such as the main land bridge connecting Crimea with the rest of Russia. .
Until now, the Biden administration has been reluctant to provide Ukraine with the long-range missiles Kyiv would need to attack Crimea for fear that such a move could provoke Russia and expand the conflict, according to the report.
