Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to arrive in Canada on Monday to attend the G7 summit which began on Sunday.The Group of 7 (G7) countries, which include the United States, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan, hold an annual meeting to discuss and align important global issues.This summit will end on Tuesday June 17.
The G7 summit: Who is attending?
In addition to G7 leaders, the summit was also attended by top officials of the European Union (EU) and leaders of several non-G7 countries.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney invited leaders from many countries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mexican President Claudia Scheinbaum, and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to arrive in Canada on Monday evening.The visit is the second leg of his three-country tour.However, his invitation to the G7 summit has created a stir in Canada.Relations between India and Canada have been strained since 2023, when former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of involvement in the killing of a Sikh separatist leader in Canada.
The World Sikh Organization criticized the invitation, calling it a "betrayal of Canadian Sikhs", while the Canadian Sikh Federation described it as a "grave insult".
But Carney defended his decision to invite India.He said it was a practical move as India is the fifth largest economy in the world and plays a key role in global trade networks.
He also said Canada and India had agreed to continue talks between law enforcement agencies, which he saw as a step forward in addressing accountability concerns.Carney said he invited Prime Minister Modi to the summit with that development.
US President Donald Trump has already arrived in Canada.Many reports say that people in Ottawa have also joined the anti-Trump protests that are spreading across the United States.Protesters chanted "No Tyrants" ahead of Trump's arrival.
G7 Summit Agenda: War, Trade, Tariffs
The summit is expected to be tense for several reasons.
Israel's attack on Iran could distract the Group of Seven (G7) nations, causing them to spend less time on other topics and learn more about how to resolve the escalating conflict.Therefore, difficult negotiations regarding the crisis in the Middle East are expected.
All G7 leaders are well aware of the serious global risks if this conflict escalates.A wider war could trigger a spike in oil prices, affecting more countries and affecting security and the global economy.
However, it will be difficult to achieve self-esteem.UK Prime Minister Kmanu President Emmanuel Macron encouraged good thoughts and efforts to reduce the gap.On the contrary, the Japanese Prime Minister Sherige Prime Minister Shereu Serigeru diverted Israel's actions, calling the attacks unnecessary and frustrating.At the same time, US President Donald Trump supported the forces, describing them as prosperity.
