The 2026 Winter Olympics continued with an action-packed Sunday including a crash by Lindsey Vonn.Ilia Malinin then helped secure the team's gold.
Winter Olympics today: Ilia Malinin helps US win gold, Lindsey Vonn crashes
MILAN - The 2026 Winter Olympics got off to a grand start on Sunday, Feb. 8, with all eyes on Lindsey Vonn.But the excitement quickly changed when Vonn suffered a major crash in the women's downhill.The 41-year-old competed with an ACL.
Von grabbed the gate with his right hand, forcing him to turn.His legs have gone kimbo and his weight is too far back on his skis to recover.He landed on his side and then somersaulted.The crash happened about 13-14 seconds into the run.Fonn could be heard wailing in pain and a helicopter was on the scene to airlift her for care.
However, Team USA secured a pair of gold medals on February 8.Breezy Johnson won the first US medal of the 2026 Winter Olympics after competing in the alpine skiing event, before Ilya Malinin's stunning 200.03 in the men's free skate in the team competition to bring Japan into the money.

Team USA responded by winning gold in the team figure skating event

Ilya Malinin, the "Quad God", scored 200.03 in the men's free skate in the team event, earning the gold medal for the United States in the team ice skating event.Malinin did not attempt a quad axel, but finished an impressive run with a quad salchow, a triple axel and a single leg backflip.
Japan's Shun Sato scored 194.02 points in the next order, which was not enough for Malinin's score.Team USA (69 points) won gold in the team event for the second consecutive Olympics, Japan (68 points) won silver, and Italy (60 points) won bronze.

MILAN — Amber Glenn said she "couldn't believe the weird backlash" she received for speaking out about LGBTQ issues in the United States.
The Olympic skate for the first time expressed her feelings for the response to his comments on Sunday, February 8, after Team Usa won gold in the team competition.
"I couldn't believe I got such a weird reaction just for people's support," she said."Obviously, I have people who support me, and that's why I'm not online right now, but I'm going to speak my truth. I'm going to continue to represent what I believe in, and what I think every American believes in, which is freedom, love, and can-do.
The American team misses the women's final
LAVIGNO, Italy – The United States will not be competing in the women's big air snowboarding final, as all three Americans failed to combine to solidify two runs from evening qualifying on Feb. 8 at Livigno Snow Park.
Of the 29 competitors in the field, the top 12 qualified for the finals on a three-run basis, with the best two scores counting.
Team America's Lily Davarnage, just 16, opened with a stellar 83.75 to finish 20th.But since then, with two bad jumps, she hasn't gone over 58 and finished with a total of 141.75, just shy of the cut line of 153.50.
Also, American teammate Hahna Norman scored an 82 on her second attempt, but failed on her third, raising a screen when she expected a score that wasn't good enough to advance.Norman finished 28th with a total of 93.50.
The last remaining American hope, Jessica Perlmutter, entered her final heat needing a big score to bolster her opening 77. But she couldn't even land her jump, falling on her face in 23rd place with a lead of 132.25.
New Zealand's Zoi Sadowski-Synnott topped qualifying with 172.25, scoring at least 82.25 in all three runs.

Amber Glenn will debut in the team competition at the 2026 Winter Olympics
Amber Glenn, the third best figure skater in the world, was a little shaky in her figure skating team competition, but still managed a score of 138.62, which ranked third among individual skaters in that competition.
His win puts Team USA in first place in the team standings as Japan advances to the men's free skate, where Ilia Malinin will compete.She finished behind Japan's Kaori Sakamoto (148.62) and Georgia's Anastasiia Gubanova (140.17) in the women's free skate.
Team USA needed Malinina to win the men's free skate to win gold.

U.S. track and field cyclist Bridge Johnson accidentally broke her Olympic gold medal in the women's cross-country race on Sunday, when the link connecting the medal to the ribbon that held it broke as she jumped high and low while celebrating her first Olympic medal. Johnson's gold medal is Team USA's first at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
"It's definitely hard. It's harder than I expected," Johnson said."I think that's probably why it broke."

Breezy Johnson on Lindsey Vonn's injury: 'Can't imagine the pain that she's going through'
American skier Breezy Johnson saw Lindsay Vonn fall from the Cortina hot seat, as she ran seven spots ahead of Vonn in the women's downhill on Sunday.
"I can't imagine the pain she's going through," said Johnson, who won gold in the women's downhill race."We can deal with physical pain. But emotional pain is something else. I wish him the best and hope this isn't the end."
Casey Dawson has been ruled out of contention for a medal in the men's 5000 meters.
American speed skater Casey Dawson finished the 5,000 meters in 6:11.88, which would have kept him off the podium.He finished eighth.
Norway's Sander Eitre, who set an Olympic record in 6:03.95, won the gold and Czech Republic's Metodej Jilek took the silver in 6:06.48.Italy's Riccardo Lorello took bronze, edging teammate Davide Giotto by 0.35 seconds (6:09.22 to 6:09.57).

USA tops Estonia in mixed doubles curling
The American duo of Cory Thiesse and Korey Dropkin snapped a two-game losing streak by defeating Estonia 5-3 in doubles.
With the match tied at 3 in the seventh out of eight, the Estonians lost the match, which allowed the United States to steal the point and take the lead.The same situation happened in the last minute, leading to the final victory.
The win improves the USA's record to 5-2, with either Sweden (later Sunday) or Italy (Monday) advancing to the medal round.

Austria's Carl Benjamin defended his gold medal in the men's parallel giant slalom, stripping off four layers covering his upper body after crossing the finish line and pulling his feet off the table.

LIVINGHO - Team USA's Iris Pflum failed to qualify for the knockout stage of the women's snowboard parallel giant slalom during the morning run at the Snow Park in Livigno.
The field of 32 combined in two divisions, one on the red courts and one on the blue courts, was 16. Pflum finished 30th in 1:40.08, meaning the 22-year-old from Minnesota will not advance to the round of 16 for one day.She was the only American in the women's PGS race.
The final time to advance was 1:35.43. Ester Ledecka of the Czech Republic posted the top time of 1:30.79 to earn the top seed in the knockout round. — Gentry Estes
Summer Bircher posted America's fastest time in Olympic women's luge
Summer Burcher posted the fastest times for Team USA during the women's singles pole practice on Sunday, February 8 at the Cortina Sliding Center.
Britcher's time of 53.172 seconds in the fifth run was the ninth-best time of the three American races recorded in the session.
