Meteorologist Cory Martin unravels the mystery of green skies. According to him, water can act as a “prism” that reflects blue light when clouds laden with water are illuminated by the yellow light of sunset. It mixes with yellow tones and results in a green sky, as if dyed with dye.
The pictures of my family’s green skies in Sioux Falls are incredible! I had to dig up this fun green cloud infographic I made back in the day. Hail reports aren’t big at this time, but the storms pack a lot of moisture in this warm, tropical environment. #SDwx #IAwx pic.twitter.com/S39JLSRfEu

Besides being beautiful, the storm was also intense: According to the U.S. National Weather Service, winds were recorded at nearly 100 mph (160 km/h), and 28,000 people were without power in the region. Now you know: if the sky suddenly turns green around you, first seek shelter, then save photos.
