Health plans were, on average, 14.50% more expensive in Brazil in June 2023, compared to the same period last year. data in file IPCA from IBGE, which revealed, this Tuesday (11/7) cumulative inflation in the twelve months ending in June of 3.16%. That is, health plans rose 4.5 times more than the cumulative inflation in one year.
In May, the National Health Agency (ANS) granted an adjustment of up to 9.6% to the prices of individual and family health plans, those that individuals contract directly with a service provider. According to April data from the ANS agency, Brazil has 8.9 million individual or family health plans and 41.3 million group plans. Of the group plans, 35 million are business plans and 6.3 million are group membership plans. Also according to the agency, while contracts with 29 lives or less must follow a set rule, those with 30 or more beneficiaries are negotiated without ANS involvement, between the client and the company, taking into account plan usage and portfolio size.
Therefore, most plan users’ adjustments are spread throughout the year and at different percentages. There might be a company, for example, with adjustments of up to 20% to its employee plans. Other companies offer larger subsidies and smaller adjustments. The 14.5% increase in health plans overall, calculated by the International Institute for Quality in the 12-month period ending in June 2023, resulted in a readjustment of ANS for individual plans and several increases of varying proportions in group plans.
The Brazilian Institute for Consumer Defense (Idec), on its website, has defined individual/family health plans and group plans. Check it out below:
Employability
- Individual: Any natural person can be hired
- collective: It is only possible to contract with the mediation of an employer company, association or union
Starting prices:
- Individual: They are generally more expensive than buses from the same operator with equivalent coverage.
- collective: They are generally cheaper than family/individuals from the same operator and with equivalent coverage.
Modifications:
- Individual: Regulated and limited by ANS
- collective: Not regulated by the ANS, it is generally higher than the taxes levied on individual/family contracts
end:
- Individual: ANS regulates the case and prohibits unilateral termination by the operator
- collective: It is current practice for operators to terminate the service unilaterally. The only restriction imposed by ANS is related to the date of termination of the contract: it can only happen on the anniversary of the contract
Stay in plan:
- Individual: indefinite time
- collective: There is the possibility of unilateral termination of the contract and, in the case of a corporate collective agreement, the restrictions associated with leaving the company (dismissal or retirement)
