Bronze medalist at the Astronomy Olympiad, student Brusque receiving the medal presented by the Minister of Science and Technology

Student Gabriela Martins dos Santos, of the Federal Institute of Catarinains (IFC) de Brusc, took the bronze after finishing third in the International Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) for the 14th edition of the competition.

The medal was awarded on the afternoon of Monday, 6th, by Minister Marcos Pontes, at the 18th National Science and Technology Week event. The event was attended by IFC de Brusque Director General Eder Aparecido de Carvalho.

Brazil won its first ever gold medal in IOAA history, as well as four silver and five bronze, with Gabriella.

In addition to Brazil, which participated in the IOAA with two mixed teams, 47 other countries participated in the Olympics, with a total of 70 participating teams. The 14th IOAA was held in a mixed fashion, between November 14 and 21, coordinated by Columbia.

Brazilian students concentrated at the Bliss Hotel in Vasoras (RJ) for exams. During the Olympiad, they conducted a data analysis test, a theory test, and two observational tests, with questions about solar physics and sky simulations, and a team competition, as a result of which it does not count toward the prize.

The Brazilian participation in IOAA XIV was calculated with financial resources coming from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovations (MCTI), from a parliamentary amendment of the Federal Deputy of São Paulo, Tabata Amaral and from the special qualities of students.

The IOAA’s training, which lasted 3 months, also included 27 lessons given by professional astronomers.
